Case study · Federal campaign

Digital fundraising for the win.

Election night 2015 was brutal for Canada's NDP — 59 seats lost as the party fell to third. MP Kennedy Stewart of Burnaby South was one of the few veterans to survive the tide, powered by one of the only data-driven NationBuilder campaigns in the party. We built it with him.

The challenge

Holding a seat against the tide.

The NDP entered Canada's 42nd election leading the polls and ended it in third place, shedding veteran MPs across the country. In BC, the party's vote share dropped almost seven points. Surviving that meant running a local campaign strong enough to break away from the national trend.

What we built

A fundraising machine with local roots.

We designed a sleek, action-oriented, mobile-friendly NationBuilder website built around fundraising, and wired every online and on-the-ground data point into one central supporter database. That let Kennedy keep his finger on the pulse of the riding — and focus his message on what his constituents actually cared about: housing affordability, ending the war on science, and stopping the Kinder Morgan pipeline.

When national NDP support began sliding in the final days, the data showed it early — and NationBuilder's communications tools, including the custom email templates we designed, helped get supporters to early voting polls before it could bite.

Beyond the election

From holding a seat to moving an agenda.

The partnership kept going. For Kennedy's Candidate Gender Equity Act, we crafted a campaign identity, a high-impact action site, and shareable graphics targeting other MPs — a campaign that convinced 23 Liberals to break with their Prime Minister, the government's largest backbench revolt to that point.

For his opposition to the Trans Mountain pipeline, we expanded his toolbox with ActionSprout, letting supporters sign and give directly from their Facebook feeds — engaging 7,000+ new supporters and more than doubling the return on the campaign's investment when paired with NationBuilder follow-up.

The sequel

You might know how this story continues.

Three years later, Kennedy Stewart ran for Mayor of Vancouver as an independent under the tightest campaign finance rules in the city's history — and won by 984 votes, with 85% of donations raised online. We built that one too →

More work that won.
