Ten thousand members. Tools built for none of them.
A union local is one of the most demanding digital clients there is: thousands of members who need secure access, active campaigns that need mobilizing, and decades of member data that can't be lost, leaked, or locked away in systems nobody can use.
Local 455's web presence wasn't keeping pace with its organizing — and in a moment when more workers are reaching for labor representation than ever, every missed connection is a missed member.
One platform for the whole local.
We recommended a full redesign on NationBuilder and handled the hard part ourselves: migrating the union's member database onto the platform, a complex integration that had to be right the first time.
The result is a secure, accessible digital home where members engage directly in campaigns and advocacy — and where every signup, signature, and reply flows into one organizing picture the local's team can actually act on.
The members came to them.
"People are so desperate for labor representation and since we got our website up, they all come to our page and contact us," says Tamlya Edwards, the local's communications consultant. The site stopped being a brochure and became a front door.
Behind it, the numbers held up: more than 61,000 emails sent, opening at 50 percent — the kind of engagement most organizations only see from their most devoted supporters, sustained across a whole membership.
"Getting folks engaged in our campaigns is crucial to what we do and we have evidence that NationBuilder has helped us do that much more effectively."Tamlya Edwards, Communications Consultant, Teamsters Local 455 — via NationBuilder's case study
Organizing is relational. Tools should keep up.
Unions won their victories long before websites existed — the relationships do the work. What digital infrastructure changes is reach and speed: every member findable, every campaign one send away, every new worker who's looking for representation able to find the local before the moment passes.
